Friends é um dos casos mais bem-sucedidos da história da televisão mundial. Ao fim da 10ª temporada da série, cada um dos seis atores recebia U$ 1,000,000 por episódio (algo em torno de U$ 22,000,000 por temporada). Propagandas nos intervalos do episódio final, que atraiu um audiência de mais de 52 milhões de espectadores, custaram em média U$ 2,000,000 a cada trinta segundos nos Estados Unidos e CAD$ 190,000 no Canadá. Um DVD especial contendo o episódio final, o piloto da série, e o clipe da música-tema da série, foi lançado apenas 5 dias após a exibição na tevê pela NBC.

O seriado não explodiu em termos de audiência imediatamente, mas já na segunda temporada tornou-se um dos programas mais vistos dos EUA. De acordo com os atores, e até mesmo os criadores (em seus comentários em DVD) dizem que já na 4ª temporada a série estava no topo da cultura pop, a ponto de todos temerem pelo futuro, tal era a superexposição do elenco, aparecendo em centenas de capas de revistas de todo o mundo. Contudo, o sucesso continuou perene, e na temporada 2001-2002, Friends foi o programa mais assistido da televisão americana (Fonte: Nielsen).
